Pomeranz, 28, earned his first career All-Star Game selection in 2016 before being traded by the San Diego Padres to the Red Sox on July 14. Between the two clubs, the left-hander was 11-12 with a 3.32 ERA (63 ER/170.2 IP), 186 strikeouts, and a .217 opponent batting average in a career-high 30 starts and one relief appearance. He also pitched in the postseason for the first time in his career, recording 2.1 scoreless innings of relief in Game 1 of the American League Division Series against Cleveland before allowing two runs in 1.1 innings out of the bullpen in Game 3.
