History was made Wednesday afternoon as Collierville Dragons men's tennis won the first state championship in program history, defeating Ravenwood 4-1 in Murfreesboro. Last year, Collierville fell to the Raptors in the championship match and were able to get the revenge in 2022.
Head coach Tony Cherone saw Collierville meteoric rise — since coaching the boys at the middle school level — crescendo into a championship title just three years later.
Ironically, the only loss Wednesday was on the #1 court. Defending Individual State Champion, Ranjay Arul, fell 7-6. The Dragons swept the other four courts and eliminated any need for doubles play. Ranjay's brother, Ajay, was the hero. He won the #2 court in dramatic fashion - winning 7-6. Aneesh Achanta, Tristan Kelly, and Carter Amaba each won their courts comfortably.
The Dragons will return each of their Top 6 players in 2023 and already have their sites on back-to-back state titles.
