The Collierville women's tennis team claimed their third consecutive sectional title on Thursday (May 19), defeating Rossview 4-1 in the TSSAA Region 7 vs 8 Sectional Championship at the Collierville High Tennis Courts. The home court advantage was a huge factor in the decisive win.
Notable, the team was playing without their #1, #3, and #4 players. Margaux Britt, the Southern Illinois at Edwardsville signee, accepted an invite from the French Polynesian tennis federation to train in Tahiti. The team's #3 for the duration of the year, Campbell Stewart, was out of town and #4, Kyra Goetsch, recently suffered a broken elbow.
When the going gets tough, the tough gets going. And, that certainly was the case for junior standout Ella De Jesus stepping up as the team's #1 and senior Lindsay Cox moving up two spots to accept the #2 challenge. The Dragons duo set the tone for a big win to send the team back to the TSSAA State Championships and one of only four teams remaining to compete for the state title.
The task won't be easy in Murfreesboro with a semi-final draw versus state perennial power, Brentwood, at 3pm on Tuesday.
The Collierville girls have not lost a district, regional, or sectional match in three years.
