Harold Lacy was a late addition to this year's AutoZone Liberty Bowl high school all-star game. But he came through with the most important play — at least on offense.

Lacy, from Cordova, scored the only touchdown of the game late in the third quarter as the Blue team defeated the Red, 10-3, Saturday at Memphis University School in the annual curtain-closer to the prep football season. He was added to the roster by Blue coach Anthony Jones — who is also his coach at Cordova — after injuries left the running back corps depleted.

"I was so happy to be added," said Lacy. "I was down because we lost our last game (to Whitehaven in the 6A semifinals) and I thought that my high school career was over. This is something I've been waiting on for four years.

"It was a fun atmosphere ... but it was very hard trying to run the ball."

After guiding his team downfield with the best drive of the game — highlighted by a 32-yard completion to Maher Angalo of Douglass — Blue quarterback Tyrique Sandusky attempted to sneak it in from the 1 but fumbled. East's Jaylon Burrus recovered for Red.

But the momentum was short-lived as Red turned it over on the very next play. Collierville's Tyler Garvey recovered on the 2, setting the stage for Lacy's score on the next play.

"He's a (heck) of a running back," said Jones. "And a lot of people don't know about him. He's a very good player."

Garvey recovered two fumbles in the game to take home Most Valuable Player honors.

"We came out together as a team and did a great job," said Garvey. "The defensive line did great keeping the linemen off the linebackers. We were just trying to get a stop every single play. We take each play as a round and just try to win each round."

Red responded with its best drive, marching to the Blue 2 before Arlington's Brandon Parker dropped Whitehaven's Kylan Watkins for a 3-yard loss on third down. Red coach Joe Rocconi (White Station) kept his offense on the field but Cordova's Isaiah Norman broke up the fourth-down pass.

With three minutes to go, Mr. Football winner Aubrey Miller of Whitehaven — who did 24 chin-ups during the Chick-fil-A Chin-up Challenge at halftime — came up with an Odell Beckham-esque one-handed interception to give Red one more chance. But Blue was up to the challenge again, forcing an incomplete pass from Southwind's Kameron Williams with 1:11 to go.

Jones then called a time-out to make sure center Brayden Helton of Brighton and Sandusky had the victory formation down pat. They did, as Sandusky took two knees to kill off the game and send Blue to its third victory in four years.

"These are great players but first and foremost, they're great people too," said Jones. "With players and coaches coming together from different schools and to get the chemistry we did in just one week ... I couldn't be prouder."

After a scoreless first quarter, Collierville's Dylan Scott converted on a 23-yard field goal to put Blue ahead 3-0. It stayed that way until midway through the third when Houston's Jacob Painter tied it for Red from 27 yards out.

The 13 points tied for second-lowest in the game's 15-year history, matching the Blue's 7-6 victory in 2003. The victory gives Blue an 8-7 lead in the all-time series.
