Collierville (7-2) breezed past Whitehaven (5-4) behind a dominant performance through the air, winning 31-14 at Dragon Stadium at Landers SportsPlex Friday night.
Part of that air attack had some trickery to start the game. After receiving a pitch, junior standout wide receiver Joakim Dodson stayed behind the line of scrimmage and threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to Hayden Walk to start the fireworks. In the second quarter, AJ Greene was inserted at fullback and punched in a 2-yard run to give the Dragons an early 14-0 lead. Whitehaven did trim the lead to 14-7 in the 2nd quarter after Jaden Thomas connected with his go-to-wide receiver, Tristan Boyce. The Dragons got one more score before the half when quarterback Aidan Glover found Demikah Gregory for a 16-yard score.
One of the many highlights on the night was Collierville kicker Grayson Lytton splitting the uprights on a 41-yard field goal to extend the Dragons lead to 24-7 early in the 2nd half. Whitehaven's Thomas and Boyce connected for a 2nd time to start the fourth quarter, but then ran out of fuel.
The hammer was Glover spinning in the backfield and avoiding a sack to find Martez Carter for the nail in the coffin. Collierville 31 Whitehaven 14. Final.
With the win, Collierville has clinched a playoff spot for the 5th consecutive year and has not missed post-season play in the Joe Rocconi era. The Dragons now have their sights on a no. 2 seed with a crucial match-up against Houston set for next Friday, October 27. Tickets for the senior night may be purchased by clicking on the link below.
