If the 2022 summer is any indication of a bright future for Collierville golf, the Dragons are likely to shine.

2024 standout Chance Elston and rising freshman Jackson Whaley both claimed gold medals at the 74th annual Overton Park Junior Open this week in Memphis. The event is one of the oldest junior golf championships in the country.

Elston, a top 15 state tournament finisher in 2021, captured the Boys 16-17 division with a 4 & 2 victory.

Whaley, who helped West Collierville Middle boys' golf team to a 2nd place finish at the TMSGA West Regional Tournament in the spring, dispatched his final opponent in the Boys 14-15 division with a commanding 3 & 2 victory.

The four-day event was held in not necessarily cool conditions at historic Overton Park. The tournament was started in 1947.

Tryouts for the upcoming 2022 Collierville High School golf season are scheduled for July 28 at Timber Truss Golf Course. All players planning to attend are asked to bring $12 greens fee, have a physical dated on or after April 15, and completed the necessary DragonFly sports medicine documents. E-mail Head Golf Coach, Mike Kent, with any questions to mkent@colliervilleschools.org.

The Dragons tee-off versus Arlington, August 11th, in the 2022 season opener at The Links at Audubon on Park Avenue in Memphis.
