Shelby County Swim league | 11/6/2019

Last night, the Collierville Dragons Men’s and Women’s Swimming had their first test on official state events. The league invite happened at the Compton Aquatic Center in Collierville and the Dragons lived up to the expectations by winning the combined meet. Collierville combined outscored 13 other local teams; the Collierville Men’s team also finished first and the Women’s team second.
We started the evening with the 200 medley relay with the Collierville girls coming in second with Emma Hurdle, Jana Chao, Haylee Haynes and Erin Milligan. Collierville Men’s relay (G. Stark, B. Simcoe, J. Norris, D. Cline) had a great win over rival Houston by less than half a second difference.
The Dragons’ first individual points came on the girls 200 free with senior Erin Milligan finishing second and freshman Elle Recor third; both under the state cut time. Future Arizona State swimmer, Milligan also won the 50 freestyle with an impressive 24.84. The guys achieved a third place with Dylan Cline’s 24.04 swim.
The 100 events were decisive to the outcome of the meet, and the Dragons were able to sum very important points led by Jordan Norris’ outstanding performance. Norris was the highest scoring swimmer at the meet, adding 18 points with two first place finishes on the 100 butterfly (56.58) and 100 backstroke (57.48). Gabriel Stark achieved a third place finish on the 100 back and Liam Anders finished second on the 100 free. On the girls side, Emma Hurdle finished third on the 100 butterfly with a 1:04.38, Haylee Haynes’ 57.23 scored second on the 100 free, and Emily Sun was third on the 100 breaststroke with a 1:17.16. All three girls achieved a state cut time.
On the only distance event available, the 500 free, Haylee Haynes finished third. On the same event, Ben Johnson achieved a state cut time with a 5:34.72.
Back to the relays, the girls team took second on the 200 free with Haynes, Recor, Hurdle and Sun; and second on the 400 free with Julia Cavanaugh, Erin Milligan, Elle Recor and Jana Chao. The guys 200 free relay finished second with Anders, Harbin, Cline and Cozart; and on the last event of the night the boys 400 free relay, the Dragons took the W, giving more than 3 seconds to the second place SBA. The relay formed by Liam Anders, Noah Harbin, Jordan Norris and Gabriel Stark finished on a great 3:40.72.
After the meet coach Gui Passos said “We improved a lot as a team since the last sprint meet. This was our first real test of how county and state championship are going to play out, and I think we did great. Outstanding individual swims again and some important relay wins.”
Collierville Dragons Swimming is getting ready for the next sprint meet that will happen at the Bartlett Recreational Center on November 16.
