A few days ago new Collierville High School football coach Joe Rocconi was inside the indoor practice facility working out his team on a rainy day.

The Dragons’ baseball team was in there as well and the softball and lacrosse teams eventually made their way into the facility.

If it had not hit him already, it did then.

“I looked around and thought what a cool moment,” Rocconi said.

The indoor facility, which includes half a football field, weights, coaches’ offices, conference rooms and academic areas is just part of the $18.5 million Landers SportsPlex that is nearing completion.

Plenty of it has already been used. The 5,000-seat football stadium opened up last fall and the Dragon Relays track meet was held two Saturdays ago in the stadium. The baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse fields, as well as tennis courts, are still under construction. All are expected to be ready for the 2019-20 school year.

“We feel like it’s one of the best in the state and can rival most in the country,” said Collierville School district athletic director Jeff Curtis. “We’re definitely blessed ... As far as that first impression when you drive on campus, there’s definitely a wow effect.”

Rocconi coached for six years at White Station High School before getting the Collierville job in February. He graduated from Collierville High School in 1995 and believes the new facilities are crucial to the community and school.
